Role of Ferrosilicon  in Steelmaking

In steelmaking, ferrosilicon 70 is used for the following purposes:

  • Product Performance: Ferrosilicon provides a convenient way to add silicon as an alloying element, which can improve various properties of the final steel product.
  • Slag Reduction: In stainless steel manufacturing, the presence of silicon reduces chromium oxides in the melt, thereby enhancing the recovery rate of metallic chromium.
  • Deoxidation: Ferrosilicon efficiently removes oxygen from the melt, preventing the formation of oxide inclusions and avoiding the loss of desired elements.
  • Fuel: Some steel mills add ferrosilicon to the melt to burn it off, which introduces heat into the furnace and helps reduce energy costs.

Other Uses of Ferrosilicon

Ferrosilicon70 is a versatile alloy with various applications beyond its primary use in steelmaking and foundry processes. Here are some of its other interesting applications:

  1. Reduction of Metals from Their Oxides: Ferrosilicon is used to reduce metals from their oxides, facilitating the extraction of pure metals in metallurgical processes.
  2. Deoxidizing Steel and Other Ferrous Alloys: It acts as a deoxidizer in steel and other ferrous alloys, preventing carbon loss from molten steel, a process known as “blocking the heat.”
  3. Production of Other Ferroalloys: Ferrosilicon is used to produce other ferroalloys such as ferromanganese, spiegeleisen, and calcium silicide.
  4. Manufacture of Silicon and Silicon Alloys: It is utilized in producing silicon, corrosion-resistant, and high-temperature-resistant ferrous silicon alloys, as well as silicon steel for electric motors and transformer cores.
  5. Inoculation in Cast Iron Manufacture: In cast iron production, ferrosilicon is used as an inoculant to accelerate the graphitization process, enhancing the quality of cast iron.
  6. Arc Welding: Ferrosilicon is found in some electrode coatings used in arc welding, improving the weld quality and characteristics.
  7. Pre-Alloys Production: It serves as a base for manufacturing pre-alloys like magnesium ferrosilicon (MgFeSi), which contains 3%–42% magnesium and small amounts of rare-earth metals, crucial for producing ductile iron.
  8. Additive in Cast Irons: Ferrosilicon is added to cast irons to control the initial silicon content, which is vital for the metallurgical properties of the final product.
  9. Nodule Formation in Ductile Iron: Magnesium ferrosilicon is essential for forming graphite nodules in ductile iron, giving it flexible properties unlike gray cast iron, which forms graphite flakes. These nodules make ductile iron more resistant to cracking.
  10. Pidgeon Process: Ferrosilicon is used in the Pidgeon process for producing magnesium from dolomite.
  11. Magnetic Circuit Sheets: In manufacturing electrical transformer sheets, ferrosilicon is used at a ratio of 3%–3.5% to produce magnetic circuit materials.

High Carbon Silicon 68 Si 18 C for Steelmaking
High Carbon Silicon (Si–C alloy) is an emerging alloy material widely used in the steelmaking and foundry industries. Among various grades, High Carbon Silicon 68 Si 18 C has gained attention for its excellent cost-performance ratio and stable alloying effects. This alloy typically contains 68% silicon, 18% carbon, and small amounts of iron, aluminum, and calcium. It combines the deoxidizing properties of silicon with the carbon-enhancing ability of graphite, making it an ideal substitute for ferrosilicon in steel production. In modern steel plants aiming to reduce costs without sacrificing quality, high carbon silicon has become a preferred choice in place of traditional FeSi 75 or FeSi 72.
